CERN Junior Fellowship Programme for Graduates in Switzerland, August 2018

The CERN Junior Graduates Fellowship Programme in Geneva, Switzerland is delighted to inform students that these programme is open to nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.


You might be wondering how the name CERN came about. Well, the  name is gotten from the acronym for the French “Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire”, or European Council for Nuclear Research. In 1952, the body was founded with the aim of building a world-class fundamental physics research organization in Europe. At that time, pure physics research concentrated on understanding the inside of the atom, hence the word “nuclear”.

This Programme is aimed at graduates from universities or higher technical institutes in a wide range of applied sciences, computing and engineering with limited or no work experience, looking to work in a research group.

Course Level: Fellowship is available to graduates.

Study Subject: Fellowship is awarded in a wide range of applied sciences, computing and engineering


Scholarship Award: CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion.  In return, CERN will provide you with:

An employment contract for between 6 months (minimum) up to a maximum of 36 months.

A stipend ranging from 5,185 to 6,438 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).

Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.

Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.

2.5 days of paid leave per month.

Applicants from CERN Member State (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) are eligible to apply for CERN Fellowship Programme.

Entrance Requirements: For you to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states).

You have graduated, or are about to graduate, with a university degree (BSc or MSc level) and have no more than 4 years’ relevant experience after obtaining your degree. Kindly note that prior experience will not be taken into consideration.

Please note that CERN Staff members are not eligible to apply for a Fellowship.


English Language Requirements: Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.

How to Apply for CERN Junior Fellowship Graduates Scholarship 2018/2019

To Apply: You will need the following documents to complete your application:

• A scanned PDF of your most recent relevant qualification.

• A CV.

• Three recent letters of recommendation (not older than a year at the time of the deadline for applications) giving an overview of your academic and/or professional achievements.

You can upload these letters at the time of application if you have them to hand. You will also be provided with a link as soon as you have submitted your application to forward to your referees to upload their letters confidentially. Please note this must be done before the closing date.
